The Hyundai Kona is one of the new crop of vehicles that are beginning to answer the reservations potential new buyers have about electric cars. They worry about range, spare charging cables and cost. It looks like Hyundai have the solutions in hand. The South Korean brand believes that its Kona Electric can manage up to 300 miles between plug-ins. That’s getting into petrol car territory. This is thanks to the massive 64kWh battery found in the more expensive version. An average out of town round trip is covered. Even the less expensive 39kWh battery variant promises 194 miles which should be ample for most daily commutes. Of course, this all depends on how the car is driven and how much power is used by in-car technology but Hyundai are certainly getting there. It helps that it’s a good-looking crossover too.

Hyundai Kona Charging Cable FAQs

The car comes with a charging cable but do you get a wall charger too?

Alas no: The price of a dedicated home wall charger is not included in the price. The Kona Electric comes equipped with basic Level One charging via a basic 110-volt charging unit that plugs into a standard electric outlet via a and a conventional three-pin plug. Users keep the cable in the car so it might be a convenient idea to buy a spare charging cable for home use or faster Level Two charging.
This 3-pin to type 2 charging cable plugs straight into a UK socket and can charge at speeds up to 2.3kw.
What is the Kona EV like to drive?

A typically conventional crossover, it is no different to others but drivers benefit from instant performance thanks to being powered by a 100kW electric motor that produces the equivalent of 134bhp of power and a massive 395Nm of torque, and that’s just the 39kWh version!
Will I save money?

In the long run, yes. Although the Kona EV is quite pricey to buy over a conventional car, there are savings to be made elsewhere. Electricity costs less per mile than petrol and of course there’s no road tax to pay (at the moment). Also feel free to drive into cities without paying congestion charges.
